Whole rye bread for short term storage
I have been buying this pumpernickle like bread at Cost Plus World Market and noticed the experation date for one I bought a couple of weeks ago is 11-11-07!! That is really a long time for bread. It is pretty healthy stuff too. You do have to acquire a taste for it. But in an emergency situation it is kind of like comfort food especially if you have butter and preserves. I bet it would last even longer vacuum packed. It is about 2.50 a loaf but is pretty filling.
The name is Mestemacher Whole Rye Bread |

Re: Whole rye bread for short term storage
I love bread but it doesn't love me so had to find a healthy alternative and this seems to be it with the side benefit of storability. Vacuum sealed and put in the fridge the storage time could be a few years. Until the power goes out of course. Let me know if any of you try it and how you like it. It is really hearty and real close to being a pumpernickle.
